Yes, No, or Emoji? Creating Polls on Instagram

Yes? No? Emoji?! Instagram recently joined Facebook and Twitter as the newest social media channel to offer polls, which are offered exclusively on Instagram stories. Users answer a “yes or no” question or select an emoji on a sliding scale to provide feedback. Marketers using the poll feature on Instagram provide a fun, unique avenue to enhance engagement and learn valuable insight from customers. As we’ve learned, active engagement is a necessary route businesses must take in order to keep people coming back. Below are tips to create polls on Instagram stories and understand the impact of asking questions.

Adding Polls to Stories 

Initially, content creators must know how to publish polls on Instagram stories which is an easy process for active users. First, create a regular story by adding a photo or typing text onto one of the typing backgrounds. Next, press the same button used to post stickers and choose from “POLL” or the emoji sliding scale. The sliding scale emoji can be customized by holding down the default emoji and choosing a different emoji. The text for “yes” or “no” in the classic poll tool can be replaced with custom phrases, inviting the audience to participate in decision making. Finally, post that story and wait for results!

So Long, Anonymity

Unlike Facebook and Twitter, anonymity is nonexistent on story polls. Creators can follow results throughout the duration of the poll which provides instant information. Specifically, visit the story containing the poll and swipe up at any time to see how followers are responding. After 24 hours, the poll’s creator receives a notification detailing how each follower voted. By eliminating anonymity, Instagram has created a way for businesses to monitor demographics (on public accounts). Users responding to polls posted by friends, however, were less than thrilled with this realization. Consequently, use self control when responding to polls from both business and personal pages.

Purposeful Engagement

Beginning promotion of an event with Instagram polls is a great way to assess the level of current engagement. For example, a sports organization may ask the audience via a poll:

A) Behind the Scenes of Practice

B) Athlete Live Q & A

After results come in, the organization provides the results and responds accordingly. Let’s assume choice (A) wins the vote and the social media team executes a plan to take fans behind the scenes on Instagram stories. Fan engagement increases by providing exclusive content on stories and hopefully brings the fans back for more polls. As interest levels grow and access to a fan’s favorite team improves, users are more likely to remain engaged. As demonstrated by Sports Illustrated, content creators took advantage of March Madness hype and polled fans to predict game results the tournament.

Enjoy the Process

Because answering a question takes two seconds, polls are one of the fastest ways to generate feedback for businesses while having fun. Polls don’t always need to be business related and can be lighthearted topics, such as user preferences in the old dog vs. cat debate. Create polls asking lighthearted questions and see how the audience responds. Keep a record of which questions receive the highest engagement for future planning. Instead of casually observing results, listen actively to the feedback being shared. As a result of consistent engagement, fans will keep coming back for more fun!

Team USA’s Social Truck Wins Gold for Fan Engagement

Team USA’s golden social media strategy was on full display last week as the Team USA Social Truck rolled onto to the campus of SMU and allowed fans to experience the Olympic movement up close. Through the social media strategy of Team USA followers are given the opportunity to interact with athletes, enjoy unique experiences, and are given content to post on their own social media channels.

Fan Engagement

Team USA excels at taking advantage of the opportunity to build fan engagement by allowing fans the chance to meet America’s team (the actual “America’s Team,” not a football team).  In Dallas, local Olympic Champion Carly Patterson greeted fans on the social truck and posted social media updates along the way to boost engagement.

When visiting the Team USA Social Truck, fans are greeted with free Oreo cookies and are given prize opportunities on site by posting pictures to social media. Of note, one of the prizes being given out at SMU had the Los Angeles 2028 logo on it. The United States Olympic Committee is wisely thinking ahead to promote the next Olympic Games that are set to be held in North America. Free cookies and swag: what more could a fan want?

Snapchat’s new crime series

If you’ve tuned into Snapchat news at all within the past few months, then you know the app is under hot water. From a poorly upgraded interface, to racial GIFs and an approved domestic violence ad, the app has been through the ringer and can’t seem to get anything right. However, Snap Inc. is persistently continuing to venture into new territory. Snapchat’s new crime series has teamed up with Condé Nast Entertainment for a six episode run titled “True Crime/Uncovered”. The app has never produced a mystery series like this before. Variety shares director George Wasgatt and writer Katherine Chan took on the project’s production. Snap head of original content Sean Mills also headed up the project.

What Snapchat’s new crime series is about

Variety reports Snapchat’s new crime series will feature a new real life crime each episode and only be five minutes a piece. Although the episodes will be released one at a time, users could watch the entire series in the same amount of time that it usually takes to watch one episode of an average show. This should keep viewers engaged and on the edge of their seats. The short snippets will feature interviews and evidence of each crime case. The show’s first episode released on March 12th.

How to find Snapchat’s new crime series

Click open on the Discover page to view the latest of the six episode series. To search for a specific episode simply type in “True Crime/Uncovered” in the search bar at the top of the screen. Snapchat’s icon is the ghost emoji, so one could say it make sense the app decided to dip into the mystery genre. Will it be any good? Users will just have to tune in to the mystery to see. Snapchat will need this as a small feat to snap back into good graces.

Inappropriate domestic violence ad by Snapchat fuels angered Rihanna

Snapchat is under fire yet again after releasing an inappropriate domestic violence ad centering around pop and r&b artist Rihanna. The ad came from a game called Would You Rather where players choose between two scenarios they would rather have happen. In a tasteless matchup it asked users to decide between slapping Rihanna and punching her former flame and singer Chris Brown.

The Back Story

This comparison references a domestic violence case that once went to court back in 2009. The court charged Brown with physically assaulting Rihanna during the time of their relationship. Rihanna was sent to the hospital and sought treatment following the attack. Brown was charged with a felony of inappropriate domestic violence. Later, the pair reunited and Rihanna underwent public scrutiny for taking Brown back. However, it didn’t last long and the pair went their separate ways soon after.

Rihanna took to Instagram

After seeing the ad, Rihanna voiced her outrage Thursday through social media Snapchat rival, Instagram. The star wrote “I’d love to call it ignorance but I know you ain’t that dumb! You spent money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to DV victims and make a joke of it!!”.

Snapchat apologized for letting the inappropriate domestic violence ad slip through the cracks in a statement to The Verge: “This advertisement is disgusting and never should have appeared on our service. We are so sorry we made the terrible mistake of allowing it through our review process. We are investigating how that happened so that we can make sure it never happens again.”

Since Rihanna has spoken out about the inappropriate domestic violence ad, Snapchat’s stock has tanked, and this isn’t the first time a celebrity has affected the app. Just a few weeks ago Kylie Jenner announced her disappointment with Snapchat’s new interface causing users everywhere into a frenzy and the app to reportedly lose around $1 billion. The app continues to break headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Mourinho has been tough to beat for Liverpool since taking over Man U. Klopp still seems to be figuring out the best way to play Manchester United. The match was obviously a frustrating one for Reds fans. The slip-ups in our back 4 continued after looking like we were past that stage this season. Obviously, these are games you never want to lose, but it seems like the team is reacting and learning from it in a way that could end up beneficial. Man U is the only team that seems to be able to contain Liverpool. But, we don’t face them again this year (with their UCL exit vs. Sevilla). Liverpool is only 5 points behind United with a lot left to play for. Where should Liverpool’s Top Four Hopes lie?

We Go Again

For a look at the top Premier League standings look here. With the form LFC is in, along with the easy exit schedule, you have to like their chances of qualifying for UCL once again. With a four-point lead over Chelsea who holds 5th place. While Tottenham and Man U are well within our reach if we string some wins together. Liverpool’s Top Four Hopes seem to be optimistic this far into the season. While first place seems to be locked down by Manchester City, the tightly packed 2-5 teams will provide plenty of reason to carry on your Premier League viewing.

Champions League Draw

With a big draw coming up within hours, Liverpool, along with the seven other clubs will figure out their next opponents. Recently, Liverpool fans that have been watching on might want to do the arbitrary and hope to avoid the smaller clubs. The team seems to be more prepared for the “big games”. Although, any UCL game, especially this far in, is extremely important. The only team that I think Liverpool should hope to avoid early on is Bayern Munich. Even though we could certainly get past them if we were to execute the counter-attack. They seem to set up in a way that wouldn’t allow Liverpool to have the free-flowing game in which they’ve found most of their successful results. Would you rather draw a mammoth club like Barcelona, or one of the less decorated clubs like Roma?


Liverpool have to juggle the Champions League and their Premier League campaign for the remainder of the season. While Tottenham, Manchester United, and Chelsea can purely focus on their premier league seasons as they are all officially knocked from UCL play. While this seems like an advantage for the competition, you could argue that the teams that were knocked may be a bit deflated. Leading to a less motivated end to the campaign. Though, With Liverpool’s depth and talent, it doesn’t seem like it should be an issue juggling both campaigns. While they will certainly set their sights on second place and their first UCL title since 2005. What will Liverpool accomplish in their 125th season?
