Social media and photography seem made for one another. It comes as no surprise that one of the first steps many photographers take when starting their business is to share their work online. But if your desire is to grow and make money from your work, which platform is best for you? 

Let’s face it, we’re an image-conscious society and technology is making it easier to share our photos. When choosing which social media platform to market your photography, you have to use a bit of strategy. You should consider everything from which site markets to your target audience to what time of day is best to post. With so many options to choose from, deciding which to use could be intimidating. Nevertheless, it’s a necessary evil and one that should definitely not be ignored.

The best strategy might be to focus on one or two platforms you’ve used personally and are comfortable with. This is important because you’ll be spending a lot of time posting updates, sharing photos, and hosting contests. Staying current with changes or updates to the platform is vital in growing your business. Three of the more common platforms used by photographers are Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. All have their strengths and its difficult to say one is better than the other. This is where doing your homework is pivotal.

When putting together your marketing plan, you definitely want to make sure you include a section focusing on social media. Also, make sure you establish a set of goals to focus on once you decide which platform you’ll use. Social media is a powerful tool that can certainly do wonders in helping to grow your business. But remember to invest just as much time on improving your photography as you are researching ways to share it.
